Upgrading the RAM in your PC is by far one of the best things you can do to improve its performance. This can extend the useful life of your PC as well - a computer that performs better is less likely to be replaced. Doing the memory upgrade however, can be a bit of a daunting task. First you have to find out how much memory your have. OK, that’s easy enough. Just right click on my computer and select properties. You can find the the amount of memory in the Computer section near the bottom of the dialog box.

System Properties

The next thing you need to do is find out what the total memory capacity of your computer is. Now things start to get a little tough. If you have your original documentation that may tell you. If not, you can try going to the manufacturer’s web site, hunt through their knowledge base or self-serve online support and hope you find something on your model PC - which they conveniently stopped making six months ago. If you are lucky you will find your system’s total capacity. Once you do, however, the game still isn’t over. Say your computer has two memory slots. Is the 1GB you have now occupying both slots or just one? Do I need to buy one 1GB chip to double my RAM or do I have to replace two 512MB chips with two 1GB chips? Who knows? And of course, once you have that figured out then you will have to identify exactly what type of RAM your PC takes (PC3200 or PC2100, etc.).

All of that seems like a lot of trouble. It’s the number one reason most of my clients put off memory upgrades. Well have I got good news for you. Crucial Technologies, one of the merchants at the GARA Systems Store has exactly the tool that solves this problem: The Crucial Memory Advisor. The tool offers two ways for you to find the right memory. The first lets you select the make and model of your computer. This will tell you what the total system capacity is and what type of RAM you need. Of course, that doesn’t help to identify what’s already in your machine. That is where the second tool, the Crucial System Scanner, comes in. This safe and effective tool will scan your system, tell you exactly what you have.

If you use Internet Explorer you can use the ActiveX version of the scanner. If not, you can download the scanner and run it from your desktop. The scanner is safe, downloads and installs in seconds and is easy to use. The scan usually takes less than 20 seconds. Once it is complete you will be presented by a page of upgrade options. The options include excellent prices on Micron Memory - the company behind crucial and one of the largest manufacturers of memory products. I’ve found the prices to be among the best available as well.

Click here to start using the Crucial Memory Advisor. I highly recommend this great free tool!
