Get More From Your Existing PC’s

Don’t have the budget to replace all of the PC’s in your office?
Here are 5 things you can do to get more life from your existing PC’s.
1. Add More Memory. Adding more memory to your PC can significantly enhance performance. Employees will be able to multi-task better and get more work done. And memory is relatively cheap today. To find the right memory for you PC check out Crucial Technologies. They have an excellent tool for scanning your machine – safely – to tell you how much you can add and what kind you need.
2. Add an External Hard Drive. Expand the storage capacity of your PC’s with a USB based hard drive. You can add us much as 500MB for less than a couple hundred dollars. Check out my Storage Solution Recommendations at the GARA Systems Store.
3. Don’t Upgrade Your Software Quite Yet. New versions of software like Windows Vista and Office 2007 are much more resource hungry than the versions you are already running. This is true of most software, particularly the proprietary and commercial variety as they have to add more features to justify the upgrade price. Ask yourself if you you really need the features. If not stick with what you have until you finally do buy new PC’s.
4. Clean Out the Dust. It’s a good idea to open those boxes every once in a while and get the dust out of them. The static electricity generated around a PC attracts dust that can clog vents and cause your PC to overheat shortening its life. Make sure you are careful not to damage the internal parts or cause any cables to become disconnected.
5. Leave Your PC On. It may not seem like the “green” thing to do, but it will extend the life of your PC. When components heat up and cool down often they also expand and contract. Eventually the silicon in those chips will degrade and the PC will begin to fail. And by keeping that PC out of the landfill for a another year or two, you may actually be helping the environment.
